I have seen oodles of these mini quilts dubbed mug rugs and decided to try my hand at it! What is a mug rug, you ask? After some research, here’s my best answer: A mini quilt that is larger than a coaster, but smaller than a placemat. The perfect spot to rest a warm mug and tasty treat. There you have it!
Using extra triangle scraps I had from my Pow Wow Quilt (and here), I pieced together two pinwheels. Pin wheels scream springtime to me! Love it! The sashing was extra from my quilt too. I sandwiched leftover batting between the pinwheels and fabric backing.
I got to test out my walking foot that came with my machine on this mini quilt. I did some stitch-in-the-ditch as well as on the sashing. Just straight lines, nothing fancy…but boy is this walking foot cool!
I finished it up with some contrast binding and -VOILA! My first mini quilt – a mug rug! It came together in an afternoon. I can see how these could be addicting! I might need one for every season/occasion! A mug rug would also make a great gift or housewarming gift for a friend who loves their coffee – the possibilities are endless.
Have you made a mug rug? Do you like to making mini projects or items on a small scale?

Alexandrea Nicole
